I am going to be going to a friends wedding in Canada in a couple of weeks. I met my friend while doing volunteer work in the Dominican Republic. I am from the United States and she is from Canada. She was the only other person working with the organization that spoke English and so she and I became fast friends. The first person who discovered the lake in 1771, Samuel Hearne named it “Lake of the Hills”. However, the name was changed to “lake to Athabaska in1778″. Athabaska is an Indian term which means “where there are reeds”. The Athabaska River is the major stream that feeds water to the lake and starts near the Jasper National Park. It’s located at the marsh areas on the southwestern part of the Athabaska Lake. The northern coast of the lake is rock-strewn while the southern coast is low and sandy. The lake drains to the Slave River towards the Great Slave Lake at the north.

Between 1934 to 1942, the northern shores of Athabaska River were the seat of a once prosperous gold-mining town of Goldfields. However, buildings of this town were later removed to a town with rich uranium deposits in its surrounding areas, called Uranium City. Summer is the busiest time for Athabaska River because barges that carry mining equipment are navigating in the Waterways. The region along the Athabaska River was discovered to be rich in oil. It is estimated that the area contains more than 600,000 barrels of oil. Experimental mining was started during 1915 through 1945 and samples were tested for quality. Numerous suggestions and recommendations were sent to the government, but it wasn’t pushed through because oil prices were not yet as competitive compared today.
